Why We Cannot Control Other People

Why We Cannot Control Other People
There is an invisible burden many of us carry.
We believe that if we explain ourselves well enough...
love deeply enough...
sacrifice enough...
or worry enough...
other people will eventually change.
Sometimes they do.
Often they do not.
This can be one of life's most painful discoveries.
Every human being lives inside a world we cannot fully see.
Their fears.
Their history.
Their hopes.
Their childhood.
Their values.
Their timing.
Even when we understand someone deeply, we cannot think for them.
Nor can we choose on their behalf.
Trying to control another person's thoughts is like trying to command the wind.
It resists.
Relationships often become lighter when we replace control with influence.
Influence respects freedom.
Control fears it.
The gardener prepares the soil.
Provides sunlight.
Waters faithfully.
Yet no gardener has ever pulled a plant taller.
Growth belongs to the plant.
Perhaps relationships work the same way.
We offer honesty.
Presence.
Love.
Boundaries.
The rest belongs to another person's journey.
There is great peace in recognising where our responsibility ends.
