The Inner Critic

The Inner Critic

"The harshest voice we hear is often the one that sounds most like our own."

There is a curious habit shared by many people.

We forgive strangers more easily than we forgive ourselves.

A friend makes a mistake and we offer understanding.

"I know you did your best."

We make the same mistake.

"I should have known better."

The difference is remarkable.

One receives compassion.

The other receives judgement.

Over time, many of us develop an inner voice that comments on everything we do.

It points out flaws before anyone else notices them.

It predicts failure before we begin.

It compares us to others.

It reminds us of every mistake we have ever made.

We call it self-criticism.

Yet perhaps this voice was never trying to destroy us.

Perhaps it was trying to protect us.

As children, criticism sometimes helped us avoid punishment, rejection, embarrassment or disappointment.

Our minds quietly learned,

"If I criticize myself first, perhaps no one else will."

Years later, the circumstances have changed.

The voice remains.

Ironically, the inner critic rarely creates excellence.

It creates fear.

The artist hesitates before painting.

The writer never finishes the first page.

The leader delays making a decision.

Perfection slowly becomes another form of avoidance.

Imagine a gardener tending a young tree.

Would it grow stronger if he shouted at it every morning?

Or would it flourish through patience, care and steady attention?

Human beings are not so different.

Growth responds remarkably well to encouragement.

Compassion does not remove responsibility.

It creates the safety necessary for learning.

Perhaps maturity is not silencing the inner critic.

Perhaps it is gently reminding it,

"Thank you for trying to protect me.

I no longer need protection in quite the same way."

Sometimes the wisest voice within us is not the loudest.

It is simply the kindest.
