The Space Between Thoughts

Peace rarely arrives by winning every argument inside our minds.

Our minds are extraordinary storytellers.

They remember yesterday.

Predict tomorrow.

Replay conversations.

Rewrite endings.

Invent possibilities.

Prepare for disasters that never arrive.

Most of us spend far more time living inside imagined futures than inside the present moment.

The strange thing is that the mind usually speaks with complete confidence.

"What if they leave?"

"What if I fail?"

"What if this never changes?"

Yet if we quietly look back over our lives, we notice something remarkable.

Many of our greatest fears never happened.

Many of the things that did happen were never imagined.

Life, it seems, prefers writing its own script.

This does not mean we stop thinking.

It means we stop believing every thought deserves our trust.

Thoughts are visitors.

Some are wise.

Some are frightened.

Some simply repeat old stories.

Not every visitor needs to stay for dinner.

Between a thought arising and our reaction to it exists a small space.

A single breath.

A pause.

A moment of awareness.

Within that space lies freedom.

The thought may still arrive.

But it no longer becomes our identity.

Perhaps peace is not the absence of anxious thoughts.

Perhaps peace is learning that we are the sky,

not every passing cloud.
