The Weight We Were Never Meant to Carry
Not every emotion belongs to us.
Some people walk into a room carrying invisible suitcases.
Old disappointments.
Childhood fears.
Workplace frustrations.
Grief that never found words.
Anxiety about tomorrow.
Sometimes, without noticing, we begin carrying those suitcases for them.
We absorb their moods.
We try to repair their emotions.
We begin believing that if they are unhappy, we have somehow failed.
It is a generous instinct.
But generosity without boundaries becomes exhaustion.
Imagine sitting beside someone who has a heavy backpack.
You may walk beside them.
Offer water.
Encourage them.
Even help for a while.
But eventually, they must decide whether to continue carrying it.
There are burdens that cannot be lifted by another person.
Only witnessed.
This is one of adulthood's quieter lessons.
Compassion is not the same as responsibility.
Empathy does not require ownership.
You can love someone deeply without becoming responsible for every feeling they experience.
In fact, people often feel safest around those who allow them to have their own emotions without trying to immediately change them.
Presence can be far more healing than solutions.
Sometimes the greatest kindness is sitting beside another person's storm without trying to become the weather.
